You forgot the best-selling I think, and that is Western Digital. (if I'm not wrong)

And for your info, I bought a W.D. 150GB ext HDD last week for 2800/- INR

The best advice I can give you is to avoid Maxtor at all costs...there is a reason they are usually so cheep. 5 years ago, I bought 10 Maxtor HD for work and within a year all 10 had failed and had to be replaced. I have never had enough good experiences with Maxtor drives to remove this memory.

I would say WD is your best bet for a great drive. Just remember to back up crucial data from it. I have a tendency to have 2 backup copies of crucial data. I try and live by the backup adage "2 is 1 and 1 is none".

yeah i agree with your comment on Maxtor. i had a 40 GB maxtor drive and it works like shit. bought it long time ago. also, as far as i know, Maxtor and Seagate are same companies. cheaper variants are maxtor.

I just got this URL from a friend:

It shows a new 1Terabyte external drive that is USB 2.0 for about $100!!!!
Not sure about the reliability of this drive as it is so new but it would make a nice external dump area for mass downloaders.

Thanks for the info TaL!

Hitachi is a good name though but 100$ for a 1 TB external-HDD is quite cheap, what say?

Seems they are planning to take over the external HDD market with this, lets see how does WD responds to this.

I think I may just have to get one so I can 'test' it out LOL

For $100 I don't think you can go wrong with it

FYI, do not forget to register your WD drive at wdc.com. It would show your 3 year warranty period. If you have proper bill of purchase, you can request to extend the time period to reflect correct warranty expiry date.

Most external hard drives (including all of the other Best Reviewed drives) attach directly to your computer. Network-attached storage drives, however, can connect to a wired or wireless router with an Ethernet cable.

I've bought WD Elements 1.5 TB hard drive (3,5'' form factor). It relies on external power source (unlike 2.5'' drives) but that's not a big deal since I don't take the drive off my table. It's quiet, doesn't get hot (just slightly warm), stands on rubber feet, and it automatically goes stand-by when not in use to save power. Mine came formatted but with no bloatware preinstalled, so I just plugged it in and transferred files to it. Yes, it's a USB 2.0 device but that's enough speed for me since I don't have USB 3.0 ports anyway...

thanks...
