The last trick that you have mentioned was once a life saver for me few years back, seriously lol.

It was due to a bug with lsass.exe process in WinXP and Win2000 that attempted to shutdown Windows after 60 seconds whenever it was connected to the internet. The shutdown -a was a quick temporary solution for this problem, and installing a Firewall and blocking lsass.exe was the permanent solution until MS released a patch fix.

I remember once in a computer institute, they had the same problem in all of their systems as they were connected to LAN all the time. They could never figure this out lol until I (as a student) installed a firewall on their whole network.

I have most of these setup as shortcuts (in Windows) so I just have to click on them. Just right click the desktop, new, shortcut, type in a name, and put the commands in the "command" section. Just be careful if you decide to put them on your quick launch bar. I had it this way for a while but sometimes I would accidentally click on it and start the shutdown when I did not mean to

I have tried these tricks before.
You can put the code in a notepad and save it as a batch file that is save with extension ".bat".
But be careful that those batch files are not placed in start up.
If they are placed your system will shutdown or restart whenever it loads the programs in startup.
