With the launch of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 last week, Yahoo introduced a new product called Pingbox™. Pingbox is an application that once embedded into your blog, website or social network page, lets site visitors IM you without needing to download or even sign into Yahoo! Messenger.

As you create your Pingbox, you can choose a background theme and size, customize the greeting your visitors will see when you’re online or offline, and enter a custom display name for your Pingbox. So even if your real name is Harold, you may choose to name your Pingbox to better match the content on your webpage, profile etc (e.g. Dirty Harry).

My review about this new Yahoo service:-

Pros:

1. Is extremely secure: Your visitors can chat with you without downloading any app or signing in and without even knowing your Yahoo ID.
2. Does not uses site bandwidth as there are no files to upload. Eveything is done off the Yahoo's server. So we can trust it more.
3. The conversation is totally secure and private. Its a one-to-one chat.
4. No chance of IM spamming as you can disable the Pingbox with one click from the new interface of Yahoo Messenger 9.0. And nobody can IM you if you are offline, invisible or have Pingbox turned off

Cons:

1. There are no options for a specific visitor. If suppose you have 5 chats simultaneously going on and you want to get rid of one, there's no option for that. You'll have to turn if off thus blocking all 5 chats. There should be a way to instantly suspend a chat/session without turning Pingbox Off.
2. Should have the feature to integrate with site's DB so that we can use member's usernames to be filled in the nickname field automatically. (not a Con though)
3. Incompatibility with Google Chrome.

Now because I am loving it, I have just installed this widget here at Tech6. You need to Edit Your Profile (Instructions available) and fill in the WID Code field to have it enabled for you. You can check out my profile for a Demo. Enjoy

wow that looks amazing! I might just have to start using Yahoo messenger just so I can use this hehe. Unless... I could make one for msn
