Nothing happens when license expires. You just won't be eligible for updates. You can run it for a lifetime if you have an owned license.

If you prefer not to renew your license, you may continue to use the last version that was available while your license key was still valid. Some features and functionality may be disabled if you choose not to renew your license. Be sure to download the correct version as later versions will not install with the expired key.

For $180 you can run vBulletin for as long as you want. However, after the first year, you will need to pay an extra $60 for updates.
