Among free, people mostly go for phpbb, smf or Mybb. I myself have hardly ever landed on a FusionBB forum.

Its not Free forum software , it does cost $$$. But unlike vBulletin , which I use on a live forum.. It has most options built into it instead of having to use hacks. The down side of it is its very limited skin wise, although a skin aditor is include in the Admin CPanel.. Its the same developers who came up with UBBThreads a few years ago... Regards.. |

oh I see! Thanks for the clarification. ![]() The ease of using/modding/skinning vBulletin is one of the reasons what has made it so popular. I have heard of UBB though. Just checked out their website. It looks really old styled, and I thought vb looks old lol.

I know what you mean about looking old style..Thats the one area of development that has let it down I think , But and this is a big BUT.... I run a large vBulletin site myself that uses quite a few hacks and every time there is a vB update you gotta go through a long proccess to upgrade the board again, which is becoming a real pain in the backside.. Where as FusionBB has most of the hacks we use built in as standard... I am considering going back to FusionBB , coz I seem to spend majority of my time on maintenence of vB board at the moment and not enjoying my site anymore... I am gonna try to get some of the big skinning houses interested in FusionBB as there is a big gap in the market and will surely boost FusionBB popularity in the long run... Regards... |

| Majority of the nice big and widely used hacks at vb.org are well supported and frequently updated. Some addons are always better as addons. If you're running a large board, you must be on a VPS or dedicated. It would hardly take few minutes for the upgrade process on such servers. Rather than uploading/overwriting files via FTP/SFTP client - zip the package ready to be uploaded and unzip on the server itself (via command line) overwriting existing files. Then run the upgrade script. It would hardly take 5 minutes. Upgrading templates is another part that can be done anytime (between close versions), and is definitely not hard. But seriously, think 100 times before migrating from vBulletin to FusionBB. You have a large community you said. People are very much used to vBulletin forum software. This may affect your community in not so positive way.

Update: Well made the change over to FusionBB.. A few permission setting probs but apart from that I am sure glad I did, it made me realise just how poor vB is without hacks & addons.. Regards... |
