what is the best way to get free backlinks to your site? I know about link exchanges but non-reciprical links are better for building PR so I would like to avoid that if possible

Then the best way is to post comments on blogs, yahoo answers etc.. They give you a valid high PR backlink and ask for nothing in-return.

You can also submit your sites to free directories. They are unltd. on the web. You can find one Directory here.

Youtube is also a good idea, a lot of blogs have no follow links on them now to prevent people from spamming the comment's with link's to their website.

Yahoo Answers.
Youtube.
Blogs.
DIGG.

Any high PR website where you can add your website to really, forums in which you post a lot in as well.

To get back links you can consider submitting your site to paid directories (dmoz, yahoo, alive) if you have money for that. But if you prefer to submit your site for free you can submit your blog post to social directories. You can get fast backlinks to your blog if it is done properly.

Market your article, this is a great way to create traffic and back links to your website and for the most part is free. Just make sure your author bio box is well written and includes links to your blog.

In my opinion, blog creation and social bookmarking are best way to get backlinks. I do not think of is using the 'trackback' feature in Wordpress. You can get some pretty fast and easy links that way.

1. Forum posting
2.Dofollow blog posting
3. Classified add posting
4.Social bookmarking
5.Article posting
6.Directory submission..

For free backlinks you should do forum posting and blog commenting because both are better way for quality backlinks and also better for relevant traffic. If it is done in right manner, you will get more benefit fro them.
