Posting in forums of similar niche as that of your site and keeping your site link in sig, can help getting some traffic. This doesn't mean you would be posting hi, hello and thank you everywhere.

If people see some quality posts from you, they'll surely make a visit to your site. I do!

If we talk about backlinks then both forum and blog commenting have highest weightage. Because of both have ability to get quality backlinks and also relevant traffic.

i think Forum posting is best because
* Increase the traffic
* Increase the backlinks
You can post more then one links in single post of Forum website.
* Increase the Page rank
* Increase brand Awareness.. etc.

According to me directory submission is best then any other things because if you are doing directory submission in related category then whenever the link will be posted on site your site will get high preference by search engine in results because most of the directory sites are search engine friendly.

Actually all of that method works for you to get traffic and quality backlinks. But the highest weightage would be forum submission/posting, that is if you post on a forum that has the same niche with the site that you are optimizing.
