Make a list of possible keywords

What are keywords anyways? Think about what you type in a search engine to find what you are looking for. Those are keywords - what people type in a search engine to find your site. For example, I have a website offering web design services. I have to think about what people are going to type in to find my site. Keep in mind, most people type more than just one or two words. If I were to look for me, I would look for a web designer in my area. Maybe one who has qualifications. I might type in "qualified web designers" or "web designers in the mid south." I could even type in "certified web site designer" and then click on "Search Within These Results" and type "Memphis, TN." There are several ways that a person can look for your page, so consider any word that might be used. Also, consider misspelled words, or words that can be written different ways. Think about the words "web page" and "web site." They can also be written as "webpage" and "website." Do a little research yourself. Some search engines, after you type in a word, provides a list of other keywords that are similar. For example, I look for sites under the keyword "graphics" and it says at the top: People who searched for graphics also searched for graphics designs, web design, flash, etc. You get the picture.

Use those keywords in your text

Some search engines search for meta tags , some look at the actual text in your document. Using those keywords well, because people are going to read your site, will help aid you in good rankings. Keep in mind, however, that search engines have gotten smarter. Some won't list your site if you use excessive keywords on a single page, or mask repetitive keywords using the same color for background and text.

Use keywords in your "ALT" text, Titles, File Names, Domain Names, etc.

Search engines can possibly look at everything! Use keywords in your domain name if possible. Name files (.html or image files as well) using keywords. Use keywords in your <TITLE> tag, and in your "ALT" text as well. Hold your mouse over this image and see how I used keywords in the "alt" text.

Use Meta Name Keywords

By adding the tags - "Meta Name="keywords" and "Meta Name="description" gives your site a boost above other sites. Use the keywords you created in your document in the meta tag for keywords. Example: (Replace the {}with <>)
{Meta Name="keywords" Content="web design, web designers, web site design, web developers, webmasters, Memphis, TN, West Memphis, AR, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mid South, MidSouth, Mid-South, midsouth, mid-south, mid south web design, web design in the mid south, web design in the memphis area, web design memphis, memphis web design, mid south designers, designers in the midsouth, certified, ciw certified, certified web designers, qualified web designers, affordable web design, CIW}

Things to know about Meta Name Keywords
  • Separate keywords with commas
  • Using the same keywords in your tag will cause the search engine to ignore the tag completely
  • It is believed that anything over 255 characters in your keywords is ignored; some believe that the limit is 1000
  • Some search engines will exclude your site if you use meta keywords that are not listed in your document.
  • Use relevant keywords
Use Meta Name Description

Writing a description for your site to add in your meta data is a good idea, even though not all search engines use it. Here is an example: (replace the appropriate {} with <>)
{Meta Name="description" Content="Affordable Web Design located in the Mid-South, Near Memphis, Tennessee. Services include Flash, Digital Photography, and Logo Design. Jennifer is a CIW Associate.}

Things to know about your Description
  • Try not to use over 100-150 words
  • Use keywords in your description
  • Do not repeat the title in your description, that is a waste of good keywords!
  • Not all engines recognize this tag.
Use the "DOCTYPE" tag

Right before the first "HTML" tag, place this tag: (replace the appropriate {} with <>)
{!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 TRANSITIONAL //EN"}
What does this do? It lets the engines know that your site is for the public to find.

A few common characteristics of Search Engines:
  • The search engine will first look at the {TITLE} tag for keywords that match the query
  • The search engine will first look at the beginning of the document for keywords that match the query (so add a nice descriptive paragraph at the top of your document with keywords describing your site)
  • Search Engines will look for a frequency of a keyword in your document, although please avoid excessive repetition of these keywords, because they don't like that either!
Participate in reciprocal link exchanges

The more links to your site, the better your site will rank. All you have to do is ask! Just go to a search engine, look for companies like yours, and email them and ask if they are interested. The worst that can happen is that they say no. You can test your link popularity by going to a search engine and typing your URL. You can also test it by going to AddMe.COM and clicking "link popularity" and it will test your URL with different search engines and see who all is linking to you!

I also read about Google checking for updates, the more updates your website has, the higher page-rank as well.

But do we really need to submit our site to these search engines? I think submitting your site to the top 3 SE's are enough.
