Default Received my Windows 7 Upgrade kit today!

Had been eagerly waiting for my Windows 7 DVD since the day I purchased an awesome Dell Studio 15.

Charged 0$. Upgrade kit arrived from Singapore via DHL/Bluedart carrier and delivered in 8 days from shipping date. It was a nice surprise for afternoon.

Funny thing was that nobody knew who the carrier was lol. Even Dell had no idea about that. It was kinda frustrating that none of the Indian Dell'ers had got the DVD yet.

Anyway, the kit is awesome. The package contains:-

1. Dell Upgrade Assistant DVD that contains the latest drivers compatible for Windows 7. Some are missing which would be published on Dell's site.
2. Windows 7 Upgrade DVD
3. Windows 7 COA Sticker. You can stick it below your battery besides Vista COA. I love this.
4. A small instruction booklet.
5. 0$ Invoice.

The kit is well packed in soft thermacol coated envelope along with a hard cardboard sheet, no chance of damage.

A teaser pic attached of the kit.

Installation/Upgrade went smooth. Took about a couple hours though as it backs up all settings and files, install and then restores all the settings. But the wait was totally worth it. I am loving it!

And btw, this is my first ever thread from Windows 7 LOL.

There are 2 methods to install the OS, and I have tried both. You can either:-

Upgrade - Upgrading with the help of Upgrade Assistant DVD is extremely easy. It would even tell you what programs (the uncompatible ones) to uninstall before attempting to install Windows 7. It would even take care of drivers update once Windows 7 installation completes. This is the best option for you if you're not very comfortable performing a clean installation.

Custom Install - Some people prefer a clean/fresh OS install rather than an *upgrade*. This is however a better option as far as clean install is concerned as it removes all programs and settings that existed in your Vista. In other words, its like installing a fresh OS on a fresh PC. Do this only if you are very comfortable with OS's and drivers. Backup data first.

I personally, wanted to test both. So I went for the upgrade option first, was long, but smooth. Then later I performed a fresh install and recreated/resized all partitions. A complete wipe out.

Hope it helps, let me know if any other queries.

Sure.. its actually pretty easy. As soon as you get your DVD, ask here and I'll explain you. What you want is exactly what I did.

In short, insert the upgrade assistant DVD and let it do its job. Then boot from the Windows 7 DVD and it will give you options to recreate/delete partitions, and install OS fresh.

Don't worry, it has to come. The shipment may delay due to location. Expect it to arrive in a day or two.

DGM or DGM4 doesn't matter. It just means DHL Global Mail.

If you choose custom install, you will have to install everything separately. It would be a clean fresh OS if you choose custom install. You'll have to manually install all drivers too. I'd suggest you to choose Upgrade if you're not too comfortable with this.

As Said by kgmaersk View Post
I faced few problems on upgrade due to few third party programs not compatible.

But on fresh custom install, all my problems have vanished in a fly. It works great. However, the only problem that you may experience on custom install would be related to drivers. And believe me, if you're not comfortable with installing drivers yourself (coz there are MANY and are not available at Dell's site either), do not attempt it coz the result would be frustrating.

But again, if you have enough time to play with them or wanna learn, just do it.
But first, have all the drivers for your PC ready.
