Thats true, I beleive from windows XP onwards, the operating system can recognize most sound cards, and optical drives without any additional drivers.

correct, most common sound/graphic drivers need not be installed. But it doesn't mean you don't ever need them in Vista/7 etc. For eg. I recently got a latest model of Compaq laptop with Vista Ultimate, but it did not recognize my graphics, so had to install them manually.

When I installed Windows XP it automatically recognised my video drivers but did not recognised sound card drivers. I will try installing Vista and see whether it recognise audio drivers or not.
