Does anyone here use a sitemap ? If so, does it work well. I'm thinking of creating one, but I just haven't heard too many good stories about it? Whats your opinion of them?

I prefer google site map it is gud one.it gives a exact information of the location.Its very useful and helpful.

Infact its an essential part in SEO'ing your website. Sitemaps are usually created in .xml.gz format to submit to Google, Yahoo, Live etc.

IMO, you should always submit your sitemap URL's to:-

Google Webmaster Tools
Yahoo Site Explorer
Live Search - Webmaster Tools

Sitemaps are very important in SEO and used by the user as well as search engine spider. There are many people which are using sitemaps for the different different purposes. Generally we use three types of sitemap in SEO.

1. HTML Sitemap - This sitemap is used to enhance the user experience that user can access the pages very quickly and very easily.
2. XML Sitemap - This sitemap is used by the search engine to get the idea about the website pages and this also helps to index the pages very quickly. We can submit this sitemap into the Google with the help of Google Webmaster tool.
3. ROR Sitemap - ROR or Image sitemap is used index the images into the search engine and if some search into the Google Images then you can get some visitors from there.
4. Video Sitemap - When we search into the Google search if you noticed that Google also shows the video into the results, so we can optimize videos with the help of this sitemap.
