Yahoo is not trying any thing to compete the Google, Yahoo is going to merge with the Bing because Yahoo search results and Advertising is now powered by the Bing and they are handling the complete business of the Yahoo now in terms of search results, ranking and advertising on the yahoo. They are also going to merge some other section of the Yahoo with some other companies. So Bing is trying to compete the Google and Bing popularity is Going upward from last 1 or 2 years.
