Unmanaged? Means no support from the webhost right. All backups, server setup, maintenance and security is on our heads. I personally would never go with this.

It's a learning curve, Shocker. You don't truely learn your system until you set it up yourself, the experience is invaluable to any techie, not matter what area.

@TaL; I'm going to grab Nagios and have a look at it now.
@WebWizzy; Good on you for making the jump. Did you purchase a VPS?

I did, but just for a month. As said, it was basically for learning purposes. Spent some sleepless nights over it. Also wrote massive pretty guides for self which help me accomplish things today without any hiccups.

Yeah, you're taking a similar approach to me. I was supposed to document what I did but I never really could be bothered, I have a local wiki setup but it only contains my school work.

I just got a VPS; $6/month

6$ a month? Now don't tell me you got 256 MB RAM for that, coz anything less than that would be too limited even for testing purposes.

Which host? You can VM me if you like.

joinvps.com, the server is REALLY shit but it's been great for what I want
64MB RAM LOL! It was great for an introduction into knowing what I was in for, though. I've been wanting a VPS for a while, but I couldn't justify $60/month for the learning curve.

Try vpslink.com. You can get a 256MB guaranteed RAM plan for 20$/month.

vpslink is what I used for my 1 month VPS and the same plan (Link 3) what Bryan referred to.

The truth is that dedicated hosting is expensive and for managed hosting it can be quite expensive but with unmanaged it is less so - just slightly but there are a lot of problems with that. It may be cheaper but you are not going to get any help. There is no help or support for you because you are the one that is supposed to take responsibility when it comes to your server. There is not going to be anyone that comes and helps you with your server; you won't be able to call any twenty four hour line that can help you. There won't even be any customer service number you can phone either, you are completely alone.
