I used FireFTP (the FF addon) until yesterday, I may still use it for FTP as I find it fast.

I use SFTP with my VPS and FireFTP had let me down, it just crashed my FF everytime I connect via SFTP.

So, I have switched to WinSCP, it works wonders and is really advanced plus its free.

My FTP server is VSFTP and I access it with FireFTP. This allows file transfers over SSH. It is a little slow but speed is not my first concern...security is. Its not like I can not do something else while I wait for a file to transfer.

I also use FileZilla, and tend to think it's the best from what I've used.

I used to use CuteFTP way back in the days, but then again I also used to use Windows. I don't even think CuteFTP is available for non-Windows platforms, so ever since I migrated towards Linux environments, I've always used FileZilla. Fast, effective, cross-platform, and the constant development means its usually in pretty stable condition (I remember finding cuteFTP - though one of my favorites back at the time - a bit buggy).

You gotta use WinSCP once. I have used FileZilla myself but WinSCP is simply great, never turned back.

Because Apple use a UNIX-based Operating System, my computer came with this app called Terminal. It's basically Command Prompt, except much more powerful. If you've ever used Linux on a brief level, you've definitely been exposed to Terminal.

That screenshot is a pic of my Terminal, accessing my server at vps.reko.in via FTP. I also SSH into it using Terminal. Think of CMD on roids...

ah okay. So you mean instead of using any GUI based FTP software, you use the terminal (command line) for the purpose? Did I get that right?

Is it something to do with security or what?

Yes, you're right. Terminal has the ability to log onto remote FTP-enabled servers out-of-the-box. The only problem is that recursive uploading doesn't work (eg/ I can't upload a folder). There are work arounds, I can upload an archive and unzip the archive, which can take less time sometimes.

My server is SSH and FTP enabled, and I control everything it does in windows similar to the one in the pic I uploaded. One of the many joys of Linux

Edit; Nah, it's not a security thing either :]
If you have a VPS, go download something like Ubuntu, or pick up a Linux Format / other magazine, they usually have releases on their DVDs. Load up VirtualBox or VMware, and install Ubuntu to a virtual hard drive. Linux as a main OS is far better than running it as a guest, but it's still fun. Open Terminal, and try SSH into your server.

I have read at many places that if one has SSH access to his server, he should use SFTP for file transfers instead of FTP.

I remember when I was working on my Unmanaged Server from scratch I never even installed any FTP app like proftpd or vsftpd. I made it a habit of using WinSCP for file transfers using SFTP File Protocol.

Admittedly, I am only new to this. I blindly purchased my unmanaged server without knowing what I had to do. With my previous experience in Linux, I've been able to tinker with it appropriately though, so I'm not at a loss for things.

I actually haven't really heard of SFTP, infact I thought it was something like vsftpd (which I use). I'll research it, thank you for that.

Edit: Just logged in with it then, haha. That's something I'll remember :]

yeah it doesn't require installing anything, which is the best part ofcourse. Just login and transfer files with Secure FTP.

Its main function is the secure file transfer between a local and a remote computer. Beyond this, WinSCP offers basic file manager functionality. It uses Secure Shell (SSH) and supports, in addition to Secure FTP, also legacy SCP protocol. Its main function is safe copying of files between a local and a remote computer.
